Scholarship Opportunities for Students Pursuing Higher Education in Health Care

The Friends of Nashoba Valley Medical Center have once again opened their annual scholarship applicaton form. All graduating seniors interested in pursuing a career in health care are welcome to download the form to apply.

Clinical Training at NVMC

The Nashoba Valley Medical Center (NVMC) was approved by The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) as a clinical education site for the radiologic science program offered by Northern Essex Community College (NECC) in August 2007. Typically, this means that the clinical site must be in good standing with JACHO or an equivalent agency or may hold a state issued license. The JRCERT must recognize the clinical site as meeting appropriate criteria for delivering clinical educational experiences and evaluating clinical competency of students. Clinical sites must also ensure they are in compliance with applicable state and federal radiation safety laws. This is NVMC’s first year participating in this program. Stacey Perron RT(R), and Nancy Brine RT(R)(M) have been appointed as acting clinical instructors.

Students enrolled in radiologic science programs do not spend all of their time in the classroom. Much of their learning occurs in hospital radiology departments. During this clinical component of their education, students learn by observing and assisting skilled radiologic professionals. Clinical experience gives students valuable insight into the world of medical imaging. Clinical Instructors are responsible for providing students with instruction/supervision and evaluating the student's clinical competence, while maintaining competency in both their professional discipline of Radiography and in instructional and evaluative techniques through continuing professional development. All staff members of the Radiology Department are involved with training and educating the students.

The clinical sites need to be able to provide students with a variety and volume of procedures sufficient to allow a student to achieve the program's competency requirements as mandated by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Serving as a clinical site is a win-win partnership that culminates in an improved work force and a stronger radiologic science community.

Two students are currently assigned to NVMC and started their clinical rotation on September 6th. They spend two days a week at their clinical site in addition to three days of class room instruction at the college. In the second year of the program, they will be at NVMC three days a week and will rotate to another clinical site as well.

After completing the two year program, and meeting all application requirements, the students are eligible to apply to take the National Registry examination sponsored by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Successful completion of the ARRT certification exam in Radiography will then enable them to be employed as Registered Radiologic Technologists. Nashoba Valley Medical Center is very proud to be associated with the education of future registered Radiologic Technologists.
